Pulau Bukom Fire – 2011

Single Shot #9

A fire broke out at the Shell oil refinery on Pulau Bukom at 1:15pm on 28 Sep 2011. It lasted 32 hours before it was put out. The affected area was at an open area at the refinery where there were a network of pumps, valves and pipelines carrying gasoline, kerosene and other refined oil products.

The fire is at the centre of the photo. The plume from the stack is not a fire. It is a flare stack which is used to burn waste hydrocarbons.

The photo was taken from Palawan beach at Sentosa Island which is about 6 km away. The time was 7 pm.

One of the coasters is a traditional carriage (Humans) where the passengers are seated. The other an inverted track (Cylons) where the passengers are hung with their feet free. The Cylons will do 5 inversions per run. This is the one you see below.

Cat’s Eye

Single Shot #7

Street cats have interesting behaviours. They can be cautious,  timid, curious. This one is aloof. Looking at me in the eye, he seems to be saying to me, “What are you looking at?”

What’s he saying to you?

SBB 420

Single Shot #5

The image below is a scanned photo of a Swiss Federal Railway (SBB – Schweizerische Bundesbahnen) . The location was the Zurich Hauptbahnhof (Main Railway Station) and the year was 1988. From my research, the train engine is a Swiss Railway RE 420 electric powered locomotive. It is one of the most common locomotive operated by SBB. These locomotives were produced between 1964 and 1985. It’s maximum speed is more than 75 mph. Some of the locomotives are still in service today.

Rail transport is a major mode of transportation in Switzerland and the SBB has an extensive rail network serving the entire country. This particular train operated between Zurich and Kloten Airport.

Singapore Street Art

Single Shot #3

There’s no need to travel up to Penang to see the street art there as there are great ones right here in Singapore. The picture shows a portion of a large mural which paintings of South American Indians in Haji Lane.

IMG_4742

In 2012, URA red-flagged the graffiti for removal as ‘it does not meet the stipulated pastel shades for conserved shophouses’. After hearing impassioned pleas from the public, URA reconsidered the decision and  said that they appreciates that the artwork characterizes Haji Lane and as such has elucidated that the guidelines for the shophouse facades are not exhaustive, or in other words, one-size-fits-all. Good call.

There are more art pieces along the lane and oh, by the way, you can fing great food in the vicinity.
